If you want to get the new design, you just need to follow few simple steps: The old design will be continued as default one for the Chrome, Windows and Linux operating systems, but can easily be changed to the new version manually.

In case you have the Hangouts app already installed on your computer (Chrome, Windows or Linux) and you still experience the old design, there is no need to panic, as only the users of Mac OS X have the single window layout by default. Other OS users were getting a solid background and not the transparent one. Although it was a good start for the Hangouts Chrome, the “floating boxes” design was only supported on Chrome OS or Windows. The design was that of Facebook Messenger, where the chat windows appeared in a floating manner. In case you are not already aware, Hangouts Chrome app was launched by Google in October last year. The second column (right), is the one where you can actually see the messages and the details of the selected conversation, plus the settings and the options of that respective conversation. The first column is where you will find the contacts, the history of your calls and your messages and a button for starting a new chat. More explicitly, there is a single window, split into 2 parts, allowing you to see the contacts and the conversations in the same place. The new design seems to be very cool, as it resembles a lot with the design of an app that was created for tablets. From the same series of improvements and enhancements, Google has improved the desktop Hangout Chrome app, by working and providing a brand new look.
